India approves COVID-19 vaccines Covishield and Covaxin for emergency use

India has authorised the restricted emergency usage of vaccines by Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India (SII), these were formally approved by the Central Drugs and Standards Committee (CDSCO). This allows the vaccines — Covishield from SII and based on the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, and Covaxin from by Bharat Biotech — to be used in a massive phased program in India, World’s biggest, starting with healthcare and frontline workers in January.
