DIPP has become the nodal authority responsible for all matters related to e-commerce by an amendment by Cabinet Secretariat called the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Three Hundred and Forty Fourth Amendment Rules, 2018.

Till now, the e-commerce sector was recognized only in the Information Technology Act and FDI Policy.
