This package is expected to provide much-needed relief not just to the ailing telecom sector as a whole, but also to Vodafone Idea (Vi) individually, which was on the verge of going bankrupt. Vi has been reeling under a staggering debt of Rs. 1.8 lakh crore, of which Rs. 1.5 lakh crore was payable to the Indian government. The outstanding included deferred spectrum dues of Rs. 96,270 crore, AGR dues of Rs. 58,400 crore, and a bank debt of Rs. 23,080 crore.
