Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg as a directory for fellow students at Harvard University. This was subsequently expanded to other US university students, too. More than 20 years later, Zuckerberg has announced a major transformational exercise that seems to go much beyond just rechristening the parent company to Meta, even as its constituents - Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus - retain their identities.
